Bhutan Itinerary

On Monday, September 21, Cynthia and David fly to Paro, Bhutan where we spend 19 days enjoying Himalayan mountain scenery, visiting temples and enjoying Bhutanese festivals. Our tour is being organized by Bhutan Nature & Culture Adventures.
 
Our tentative itinerary is below:
 

Mon 21 Sep

Fly from Kathmandu to Paro, Bhutan

Druk Air KB203 Lv 3:25pm Arrive at the Paro international airport 4:40pm. You will be received by your guide and transfer to hotel. There will be brief orientation on the program by your guide. If time permits, visit Paro town and some places of interest. Overnight in hotel.

Tue 22 Sep

Paro Sightseeing

Visit the places of interest in Paro which includes National Museum, Ringpong Dzong built in 1646, Drugyel Dzong built in 1649, Kichu Lhakang built in 7th century.  In the evening visit Paro town. Overnight in hotel.

Wed 23 Sep

Paro to Thimphu

After breakfast, drive to Thimphu to witness the first day of the Thimphu Drupchen festival. The festival is one of the sacred festivals in western Bhutan. After witnessing the festival, drive to Hotel. Afternoon do the sights in Thimphu.

Thu 24 Sep

Thimphu Festival and sightseeing

After breakfast drive to Tashicho Dzong to witness the festival. It is the 2nd day of the festival and the most important and sacred dance depicting the main protective deity of the country. After noon do other sites in Thimphu or do a short hike in Thimphu. Overnight at Hotel

Fri 25 Sep

Thimphu to Punakha

After breakfast drive to Punakha. The drive is for 2 hours. Visit Punakha Dzong built in 1637. Afternoon visit other sites and hike to Chimi Lhakang or to Namgay Yueling Monastery. It is nice hike through rice fields and villages. Overnight at Hotel

Sat 26 Sep

Punakha to Trongsa

Drive to Trongsa. The drive is for 5 hours through beautiful forest and over Pelela pass with fantastic views. Overnight at Hotel

Sun 27 Sep

Trongsa to Jakar

In the morning visit Trongsa Dzong, Ta dzong museum and other sites. After lunch drive to Bumthang. The drive is for 3 hours. Overnight at Hotel

Mon 28 Sep

Jakar Festival

Dedicate the day to witness the Tamshing Phala Choepa festival. It is one of the oldest festivals in the country founded by Terton Pema Lingpa in 14th Century. Overnight at Hotel

Tue 29 Sep

Jakar Festival and sightseeing

Dedicate the morning for the festival. In the afternoon visit all the places of interest in Bumthang. Overnight in Hotel.

Wed 30 Sep

Jakar to Ngalakhang

After breakfast drive to Tokto Zampa where the trek begins. The walk is very pleasant going through villages and fields. As you near the camp you are entering Ngang Yul (Swan Land) and have Ngalhakang temple at the centre. The walking distance is 20Kms and will take around 5-6 hours. Overnight at camp (2,800m)

Thu 1 Oct

Ngalakhang to Saserpo

The trail begins with a gradual climb through conifer and rhododendron forest to Phepela Pass (3,353m). From here the trail goes downward to Saserpo. The walking distance is 19 km and will take 4-5 hours. Overnight in Camp (3,620m)

Fri 2 Oct

Saserpo to Ugyencholing

The trail continues downward through thick bamboo and pine forest to Ugyecholing. The walking distance is 12 km and will take around 4-5 hours. The camp is near a village. Overnight at camp (2,820m)

Sat 3 Oct

Ugyencholing Rest Day

Rest at Tang Ugyen Choling Village. It is one of the most beautiful places in Bumthang. Visit Ugyen Choling Palace built by second king of Bhutan. Overnight at camp (2,820m)

Sun 4 Oct

Ugyencholing to Jakar

From the camp drive to Jakar. The drive is for 2 hours. Rest day at Jakar. Overnight in Hotel.

Mon 5 Oct

Jakar to Phobjikha Valley

After breakfast drive to Phobijikha. Phobjikha is a very beautiful valley and is the winter home of black-necked crane. Visit Gangtey monastery. It is one of the oldest monasteries of Nyingma School. Overnight in Hotel.

Tue 6 Oct

Phobjikha to Thimphu

Morning drive back to Thimphu with lunch stop at Dochula Pass. Overnight in hotel

Wed 7 Oct

Thimphu to Paro

Morning spend in Thimphu shopping for souvenirs. After lunch drive to Paro.

Thu 8 Oct

Taktsang Hike

Do the hike to the famous Taktsang the Tiger nest. Overnight in hotel.

Fri 9 Oct

Depart to Kathmandu

Depart from the Paro international airport. Druk Air KB202 Lv 8:55am, Ar 9:50am.
